    Summary of Opportunity


    The Lewis Katz School of Medicine (LKSOM) at Temple University is seeking qualified candidates and candidate nominations for the role of University Attending Veterinarian/Director of the University Laboratory Resources (ULAR).  This position provides support for the University’s Research enterprise and furthers the educational mission through the direction and oversight of the institution-wide animal care and use program for all vertebrate animals used in biomedical research, teaching and testing. ULAR is an AAALAC accredited, USDA registered, program comprised of 55,000 sq. ft. of animal housing/support space that provides service support for a wide variety of laboratory animal research species. 


    This is a full time, non-tenure track, faculty position in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine and reports to the Sr. Associate Dean of Research, the Institutional Official (the Vice President for Research), and the Associate Vice President for Research Regulatory Compliance. The level of faculty appointment will be commensurate with the experience and academic achievement of the selected candidate. 


    The Attending Veterinarian (AV) ensures that the institutional animal care and use program complies with all appropriate federal, state and local regulations; adheres to AAALAC standards; and meets current veterinary standards for maintaining animal colony health; providing appropriate veterinary oversight and care; ensuring optimal animal welfare; and maintaining appropriate animal housing, equipment and daily care. The AV assists investigators with space utilization and specialized housing needs, evaluation/selection of new animal models and techniques, and refinement of experimental procedures to enhance animal welfare. The successful candidate works collaboratively with the departments of Environmental Health and Radiation Safety and Occupational Health, as well as with industry partners and animal resource vendors. The AV oversees the development and implementation of training programs for investigator personnel in the humane care and use of laboratory animals. The incumbent prepares, and participates in, institutional site visits by external oversight organizations (e.g. AAALAC, USDA, OLAW) and serves as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and on other relevant committee’s (e.g.  Institutional Biosafety Committee, Animal User Committees).  The AV informs and advises University leadership regarding issues and policies pertaining to animal care, use and welfare.


    The ULAR Director ensures that departmental facilities and programs meet all required regulatory standards and provides quality service for research faculty. S/he oversees all aspects of the administrative, veterinary and husbandry programs including: facility renovation and space allocation/utilization; husbandry care; preventive medicine, health surveillance and enrichment programs; medical and surgical treatments; budget preparation and cost accounting; purchasing/billing processes; and consultation and training of research investigators and personnel.

    Candidate Minimum Qualifications




    Completion of an accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) program.  If degree was not attained in the US, a certificate of equivalent training (e.g. the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG)) accepted by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is acceptable. AVMA board certification in laboratory animal medicine (DACLAM), or equivalent.




    A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in laboratory animal medicine, with a minimum of 5 years of animal facility administrative experience (leadership and/or managerial) within an academic environment. A minimum of ten (10) years supervisory experience.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


    • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing improvement of the University Animal Care and Use programs and service support for the research mission.
    • Direct knowledge of the current federal program requirements, standards and guidelines (USDA, OLAW) for the care and use of vertebrate animals in research, teaching, and testing; and the AAALAC accreditation process and standards.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills in workforce management and budget oversight.
    • Demonstrated experience with a wide variety of research and teaching animal models.
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (both written and oral)
    • Demonstrated organizational skills.
    • Ability to function effectively as a member of the institutional animal care and use community, and work productively to support diverse constituents.
    • Ability to manage sensitive issues with discretion, tact and confidentiality.
    • Computer literacy in standard word processing programs and in internet applications.

    Additional Certifications:


    • Current, active license to practice veterinary medicine in a state or territory of the U.S., and the ability to obtain PA state licensure within 3 months of hire.
    • Current National Veterinary Accreditation – Category II (USDA accreditation), or the ability to obtain accreditation within 6 months of hire.
    • Current DEA license (for use of controlled substances by the ULAR veterinary personnel).
